About

A friend of mine emailed me a link to Possum Living in early 2010. I was immediately intrigued by it. I watched the videos featuring the author, Dolly Freed. I picked up a copy of the book that night before finding a free copy of the book online in HTML! Someone actually typed up the entire book????

Like Dolly, I wanted to be free of the rat race. A full time job working for someone else has become modern slavery in my opinion. I have too many things I wanted to do for myself. While most people are fearful of losing their jobs during this recession, I have been planning on quitting my job. I spent the entire year taking permaculture classes on every Sunday to gain better understanding of growing food and network with other like minded people. I started putting together raised beds in my garden to grow various vegetables. I also have various fruit trees in the garden. I have slowly turned my backyard into a homestead farm, which I named Sand Village Farm. The "farm" will always be work in progress, but it has already produced more than I can eat. I made various dried fruit and pickled vegetables with the surplus in addition to giving some away.

Today, January 6, 2011, I turned in my resignation. Suddenly, the world seems much brighter and freer. Unlike Dolly, I don't want to live like a possum. I imagine I'll live more like a squirrel. I will be gathering as much free food as I can and as fast as I can. I'll be running and dodging because a squirrel could get run over by a car at anytime. I want to do all the things I wanted to do but couldn't when I was trapped in the cubicle.

What would you do if you have one year to live?
